We want to get you up and running with Milton as quickly as possible. That’s why we’ve included everything you need to get started in our demo site. You’re just a couple of clicks away from a fully functioning site! Just install the demo and then dive straight in editing and entering your own content.
Here’s how to get your website just like our demo!
Inside your download package, you’ll find a folder labelled “Import demo content”. Inside that folder you’ll find the dummy XML, Slider zip file and a json file for the theme settings. This is all you need to set up the content just like our demo.
First, make sure you have the theme installed and activated on your WordPress install.
The required plugins are listed below:
- Menu Image
- Slider Revolution
- Smart Social Media
- The Consultant: Theme specific post types and taxonomies
- Visual Composer
- WP Store Locator
- Contact Form 7
- Easy Bootstrap Shortcodes
- MailChimp for WordPress
Once you’ve made sure the plugins are all activated, head on over to the Tools menu from the WP-Admin and select “Tools -> Import” and select WordPress from the list of options available. Follow the on screen instructions to install and activate the WordPress importer plugin, then click the browse option to locate the XML file from the Demo content import folder on your computer and hit import to complete the process.
Now you have the plugins active, the theme active and the demo content installed, you have to import the theme settings. Go to the “WP-Admin ->Theme Settings” panel and you’ll see one of the last options in that panel is import/export. Open that window and then locate the Consultant.json file from the demo import folder on your desktop. Open the file and copy the code inside. Head back over to your WordPress installation and paste the code into the window, then hit import. Go to the theme settings panel and check that the logo and settings have populated.
Setting up the slider
Now to get the slider up and running, head on down to the Slider Revolution tab and click on it. When the screen refreshes you’ll see an option to import slider in the main window. Click import slider and choose the Consultant demo slider zip file from the Demo content folder on your desktop.
If you’d like to check the settings from the front end of the site, make sure you do a hard refresh (F5) in your browser to ensure you’re seeing the correct content – this theme uses Sass which will recompile the css on each occasion an edit is made on the Theme Settings panel.
Setting up the menu’s
The next thing you’ll need to set up is your menu’s. Milton offers three menu locations. Main menu, mobile menu and top menu. These locations aren’t automatically setup on installation. We advise you set up each menu to ensure your site remains as in the demo site and functions as you would expect. You will need to set these menu locations under “Appearance -> Menus” from the WordPress admin area.
- The main menu is for your sites main navigation.
- The mobile menu is used for mobile devices viewing the site
- The top menu appears right at the top of the page, allowing you to add additional links in a more discrete navigation menu set to the right hand side.
Most of you will be familiar with setting up a custom menu in WordPress. If you haven’t come across this before, please see WordPress Menu User Guide to get started, then follow the steps below.
We suggest replicating our layout to start with, so you can see all the different display options and layouts, before deciding which ones you’d like to use on your content and recreating your own menu. In our demo menu we have the following pages set for each menu. The – icon indicates the item is a subpage under the main navigation heading.
- Services Masonry
- Services Grid
- Services fixed Height Grid
- Services Full Width Slider
- Services Chessboard Slider
- Services Multi Column Slider
- Projects Masonry Grid
- Projects Chess Grid
